Formula KGP stands for Kart Grand Prix and is the Worldwide karting formula for Italian engine manufactuer BMB. KGP is the only karting catagory linked with a F1 team - Marussia Virgin Racing .
The class is for drivers 16 years + (or an existing Nat A licence holder who is in the year of their 16th birthday)
The KGP concept is simple, a BMB 2 stroke reed valve (TAG) water cooled 125cc engine with centrafugal clutch, push button start. The engine produces approx 30HP and is RPM limited to 16000rpm. The engine is fitted with a two jet 26mm Tryton butterfly carburettor. The engine is unsealed annd does not have a troublesome power valve !
- There is a choice of 4 types of radiator ranging from £85 to a max cost of £205 + VAT.
- Formula KGP is restricted to its own 2 stroke oil £12.95 + VAT and own BMB spark plug £10.95 + VAT
- Any kart chassis that meets MSA regulations with rear brakes only may be used.
The beauty of Formula KGP is that the owner can maintain the engine themselves or use a recommended KGP engine builder. The engine is open to some basic tuning with strictly only genuine BMB parts allowed. The cylinder is cast iron so can be honed and has a life of over 20 piston sizes. Most recognised engine tuners would charge a one off tuning fee of between £200 and £300 to tune the KGP. This need only be down once in the engines life. It should be noted that races have been won with engines straight out of the box !
- Engine running times are scheduled at 8 to 10 hrs for a Piston and ring ( Top end service parts kit is £94.00 + VAT) and a full rebuild scheduled at 18 to 20 hrs (full rebuild kit inc con rod etc £340 + VAT).
- Tyres are provided by Vega in the form of the compound XH KGP slicks £125 + VAT and vega W5 KGP wets £138 + VAT
- Formula KGP is approx 1 second faster than Rotax Max and about 0.5 secs slower than KF2.
